# How many words is a 5-minute speech?

The short answer is about 650 words. The useful answer is between 550 and 750, and which end you land on depends less on your script than on what you are doing while you read it. A conference talk with slides, pauses and a demo burns minutes that never appear in your word count.

Most adults read aloud at roughly 130 [words per minute](https://wordcounter4u.com/word-counter) when speaking to an audience. Conversation runs faster — 150 to 190 words per minute — because nobody is projecting to the back of a room or waiting for a laugh. Presenters who have rehearsed usually settle around 120 to 140.

## Words per minute, at a glance

| Length | Slow (110 wpm) | Average (130 wpm) | Brisk (150 wpm) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 minute | 110 words | 130 words | 150 words |
| 3 minutes | 330 words | 390 words | 450 words |
| 5 minutes | 550 words | 650 words | 750 words |
| 10 minutes | 1,100 words | 1,300 words | 1,500 words |
| 20 minutes | 2,200 words | 2,600 words | 3,000 words |
| 45 minutes | 4,950 words | 5,850 words | 6,750 words |

> **Write to the slow column**
>
> If you are nervous about overrunning, draft to the 110 wpm figure. Speakers almost never finish early and get penalised for it; they routinely overrun and get cut off mid-conclusion.

## What actually eats your time

A [word count measures](https://wordcounter4u.com/word-counter) the script, not the performance. These are the things that quietly consume minutes:

- Pauses for emphasis. A deliberate two-second beat after a key line, used ten times, is twenty seconds gone.
- Slide transitions. Every 'as you can see here' costs three to five seconds while eyes move to the screen.
- Audience reaction. Laughter, applause and the shuffle after a question all happen in real time.
- Demos and live examples. These are the biggest risk: they expand under pressure and never contract.
- Your own adrenaline. Some speakers speed up by 20 per cent on stage; others freeze and slow down.

## A better way to time a talk

1. Paste your script into a [word counter](https://wordcounter4u.com/word-counter) and check the speaking-time estimate for a first sanity check.
2. Read it aloud, out loud, at performance pace — not silently, which is roughly twice as fast and will lie to you.
3. Time the read with a stopwatch and compare it to the estimate. The gap is your personal speaking rate.
4. Cut from the middle, not the end. Openings and closings are what audiences remember.
5. Re-time after every edit. A 10 per cent cut in words is rarely a 10 per cent cut in time.

> If you have not said it out loud with a timer running, you do not know how long your talk is.

## Special cases worth knowing

### Wedding and best-man speeches

Aim for three to five minutes: [400 to 650 words](https://wordcounter4u.com/word-counter). Guests are standing, holding drinks, and the goodwill in the room drops sharply after the seven-minute mark.

### Video scripts and voiceover

Narration for video is usually recorded at [150 to 160 words per minute](https://wordcounter4u.com/word-counter) because it is edited afterwards and pauses are added in post. A 60-second explainer script is typically 150 words, not 130.

### Non-native and technical delivery

Speaking in a second language, or reading dense technical material with numbers and names, slows almost everyone down. Budget [100 to 120 words per minute](https://wordcounter4u.com/word-counter) and rehearse the hardest paragraph twice as often.

## The one-line version

Take your target minutes, multiply by 130 for a first draft, then read it aloud with a timer and trust the stopwatch over the arithmetic every single time.
