I still remember my first day at school. I was six years old and I did not want to go.
My mother walked with me to the gate. She said, "You will be fine." I was not sure that she was right.
The classroom was bright and there were twenty other children. Everybody looked at me when I came in. I sat down at the back and said nothing for an hour.
Then the teacher asked me a question. I answered it correctly, and she smiled. After that the day was easier.
At lunch I made one friend. We are still friends today, more than twenty years later.
Now I understand something I did not understand then. Everyone in that room was frightened. I just could not see it.
