Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Ali a twenty-six-year-old primary school teacher who grew up in London and has lived in Manchester for the past two years. I have a father named David, a doctor of nearly thirty years, and, perhaps less obviously, I have a mother named Sarah, a nurse at the same hospital. Beyond the immediately apparent, I have a younger sister named Emma, nineteen, studying medicine. At the same time, I have family dinners together most evenings, if only because the alternative rarely serves anyone well. What I find myself returning to, more than anything else, is that I chose teaching instead of medicine, unlike the rest of the family. If nothing else, I hope this makes clear that what defines me is less any isolated fact than how growing up around hospital talk shaped my respect for hard work, even in a different career.
