When you type an address into a browser and press Enter, a surprising amount happens in the second before anything appears.
First, your computer has to find out where that website actually lives. The name you typed is for humans; the network works in numbers. So your machine asks a directory service for the number that goes with the name, and that answer usually comes back in a few thousandths of a second because somebody nearby has already asked the same question recently.
Next, your computer opens a connection to that address and agrees on how the two of them will keep the conversation private. This is the part that puts the padlock in the address bar. Both sides prove who they are and settle on a shared secret, and from that point on anyone listening in the middle sees nothing but noise.
Then the actual request goes out: give me this page. What comes back is not the page. It is a description of the page, in text, and your browser builds the thing you see from that description, fetching images and scripts as it goes.
The remarkable part is not that this works. It is that it works across thousands of kilometres, through equipment owned by dozens of different companies, none of whom have any agreement with each other beyond a shared set of rules — and that it does so fast enough that the delay feels like nothing at all.
